Title: subing large rifle primers for large pistol primers
Post by: gadabout on April 18 2023 05:16:57 PM MDT
I am out of large pistol primers. I would think I could use large rifle primers with a little reduction in powder as I have done this with small rifle in for small pistol need. Any ideas?? Craig

I use small rifle & pistol primers interchangeably. they seated properly and shot fine. chronographed tests showed no difference. I tried to use large rifle primers in pistol brass but the primer cup is too long to seat the primer flush. so NO large rifle and large pistol primers are not interchangeable.

As Blaster notes, small primers have the same external dimensions between pistol and rifle.  IPSC shooters have long considered them interchangeable.

Rifle primers have different height dimensions than pistol primers. There are lots of schemes to do so, such as reaming the primer pockets deeper on your brass.  None of them seem a good idea to me.

Well you guys are correct as I measured the two primers and they are .135 and .115 so they are different. I couldn't tell by looking at them and I bet I could install them and really screw something up. Ha Ha. Thanks for your input. I have a few large pistol primers left but will get some more asap. Thanks again.  Craig

So using them and not seating  flush could be potentially dangerous then, yes?

Diameters are different for LP vs. LR

Yes.  Slam fire is possible in a semi-auto, in a revolver it can tie up the action by rubbing.

Thanks, the possibility of a slam fire was what I was wondering about as well.

I found large pistol primers today and they were CCI Mag primers and only cost me 139.41 out the door. Well I got them anyway.  Craig

Ouch.  I was wavering back and forth when American Reloading had Ginex LPP in stock for about $80/K.  Had to buy a 5K case to get that price, and I didn't.  Now I am questioning that decision.  I still have about 1500 on hand.  But with my mom's new interest in shooting 45 ACP, and summer coming, those may go fast.

Taking a trip by car across the country in June.  Gonna have to assign someone in the vehicle to scout duty to check inventory of every sporting goods store we pass along the way.
