Title: Cleaning the XDm 3.8 compact 9?s striker channel
Post by: Kenk on January 06 2023 10:10:33 AM MST
What method are you using to clean your  XDm striker channel? I do have some extra roll pins from Powder River, but it seems kinda silly to remove the pin unless there?s a real problem. As of now, I just give the striker channel a few blasts with Gun Scrubber, and then hit it with canned air

I have been spraying a little gun scrub then use a brush where I can. Then blow out with compressed air then repeat with CLP then blow that out as well. Working so far.

Thanks, I really like Birchwood Casey?s Gun Scrubber, but my last 3 cans have run out of propellant prematurely leaving me with a 1/3 to a half can that I can?t use. In all reality, I should call or email them, who knows, maybe they?ll send me a free can 😊 it?s expensive stuff as it is, but only being able to use a portion makes it all that more expensive

Buy non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner.

I?ve read many times of people using brake cleaner in place of standard gun solvents, but haven?t tried it, so no I?ll affects on plastic or polymer parts then?

I've never heard of an issue when you use NON-CHLORINATED brake parts cleaner. When I was a mechanic, we used it all the time on plastics and never had a problem. Chlorinated will damage some plastics. Carb cleaner will damage some plastics.

Thanks, any particular brand you recommend? I?m assuming it?s substantially cheaper, or no

That?s unfortunate I have not experienced that with gun scrub. Hopefully I won?t have to. I have used brake cleaner as well but prefer not to as it seems to leave a film.

Go to your local auto parts shop and they will be cheaper. Walmart is cheaper too. I buy it on sale for $2 a can sometimes.

thanks for the brake cleaner idea. I learned the hard way about getting oil in the striker channel!

Non chlorinated brake cleaner works fine for guns. A good friend of mine's father is a well known bench rest rifle maker. Some of his custom hunting guns go for $30,000-$40,000. He's used whatever is on sale at the auto parts store for years. Carb cleaner on barreled actions, non chlorinated brake cleaner on most everything else.

This will be a huge money saver, considering a large can of Gun Scrubber is around $15.00 -  $18.00

I picked up some of the non-chlorinated brake cleaner for dirt cheap, and it works great. I did email Birchwood Casey and received no response, 3 emails later they got back to me regarding Gun Scrubbers propellent running out early in three cans, and are replacing them. I?ll be sticking with the brake cleaner, but it is nice they did the right thing and replaced the funky ones
