do you guys just fiddle with the one you, or look for a lighter one, and if so, who do you recommend?
What gun are you referring to?
RIA 1911
the one that's in it breaks at a little over 7lbs (Factory) according to Lyman trigger Gauge. Would like it closer to 4lbs.
Have you done a trigger job on a 1911 before, or is this a first attempt? No offense intended with this question. Just trying to offer the best advice I can.
Yes done my SR 1911 but it did not take much at all just a little tweaking on sear spring
I typically take out all of the lockwork on a 1911 that I'm working on. I look for burrs, machining swirls, basically anything that can cause undue friction. I also check the slots in the frame that the trigger slides in. I tend to polish everything except the mating surfaces of the sear and hammer with a dremel, as well.
If that doesn't get me what I want, then I start looking at Wilson parts.
Trigger pull on 1911s is affected by a combination of things. Mainspring tension, sear spring tension, series 80 style firing pin block, undue friction between parts, etc. What you risk by bending the sear spring is having the slide outrun the sear and hammer follow. Although lots of people probably do it and you've done it successfully already. You could go that route and have no problem.
I'm just fussy and want to see what's going on with all the parts involved. I would definitely not lower the mainspring tension in a 10mm 1911 as many people do for target tuned .45s. Your slide speed will increase.
If you just want to replace the sear spring, I'd suggest Wilson. They've been making very high quality 1911 parts for a long time. I really like their different length triggers, as well. It's nice when the gun fits the shooter perfectly.
Good luck with it. Let us know how it turns out.
Thank you

My RIA Ultra FS trigger was a little over 4lbs from factory. Unfortunately the factory mainspring was reduced power and caused light primer strikes and failure to fire issues. I replaced with the GI standard spring to correct the problem. Now the trigger pull is close to 6lbs. Since it is a nice crisp trigger pull at 6 lbs I will leave it alone. If I ever have to completely disassemble the pistol I may work on it.
