Title: Alternative favorite powders to Blue Dot?
Post by: wildbilloh on December 21 2022 07:23:20 PM MST
Hello,

New member here...long time reloader but first time loading 10MM.  I have been looking thru my books and also reading thru the threads on this site.  It sounds like a favorite load is 180gr XTP or HAP w/ 10.4gr of Blue Dot.  I cannot find Blue Dot powder locally (or even on Powder Valley, Midsouth, etc).  I have Accurate #9, which I used to run off a test batch last weekend.  12.0gr behind a 180gr plated RNFP.  It functioned fine out of my 1911 but the groups were not outstanding.  I normally use titegroup for 40 S&W powder puff loads for SCSA, but also have CFE Pistol, Unique, Sport Pistol, Bullseye, and Win 244 on hand.

I'd like to run the 180gr plated RNFP I have, but also have the 180gr XTP & HAP that I plan to use.  Looking for favorite pet loads for accuracy for bullseye.

I'm shooting both a Magnum Research 10MM Govt and a Glock 21SF w/ a Lone Wolf G20 barrel.

Any other powder and recipe suggestions greatly appreciated!

-Bill

180 gr jacketed over 6.4 grains Bullseye should do well!

Thanks Guys!

I ordered some Longshot, True Blue, and Zip off Brownells and just bit the Hazmat fee as none of those are found locally in my area.

Still hoping to track down a pound of Blue Dot, but I may try Bullseye since I have it on hand too.  Basically looking for the most accurate / tightest group load not necessarily lightest recoil (though that combo would be great!).  I use 3.7gr of titegroup for my 40 S&W powder puff and that's literally no recoil, decent grouping though not the best...but more than sufficient for Steel Challenge.

Yep, still trying to track down a pound of Blue Dot...but this winter storm is not going to make any powder hunting trips happen for at least a few more days!

Power Pistol works well with the 10mm.

Longshot, BE-86, AA#9 all are very good, but Blue Dot works best for me, and I finally scored some today at Powder Valley.   I've been searching for BD since before the scamdemic.

With the accuracy I get with my target BD loads - 10.4gr / 180gr HAP, I can overlook it?s excessive flash

Yes I agree.  It has taken 2 years for Power Pistol to get to Wyoming.  I just bought 2 bottles for $120 dollars. "ouch"!!
The Power Pistol is working out just fine.

BE-86/Long Shot/Major Pistol/ 800X
All good with 200gr XTP or Nosler JHP

BD is what I use in my G20 with 10.0 with 200gr
In my pistol seems max is around 10.6 or 10.7
I backed off to 10.0 to 10.2 of BD.

My normal  load is a 180gr with 10.4 of BD... it seems to be the most accurate
when I want a hotter load, I just sub a 200gr XTP ( leaving the powder drop alone )
No issues

VV N105 is my preferred powder.

Too much lot to lot variation with Blue Dot in the old days.
You old guys will remember the term "Super Face".  Caused by Blue Dot lot-to-lot variation.
Maybe they have it fixed now, but I'll just pass.

Tony

VV stopped making N105 last summer, unfortunately.  If you find any, load up.

Since you have Unique on hand try a load of about 7.0gr with a 180gr bullet. Makes a good target load that I used to use before I changed to Ramshot Silhouette. Of course I don't know if i will be able to get more of that.

I'm not sure that is correct.  VV is still showing N-105 on their website, but oddly, under the 300 series powders, not the 100 series.
