Title: 10mm Commander sized pistols
Post by: gnappi on September 16 2022 10:34:03 PM MDT
I have a Bul SS commander in .357 Sig and an all steel RIA commander in .40. I'm thinking of a replacement 10mm barrel for the RIA. Anyone have a steel 10mm commander sized pistol to comment on?

Fusion makes a 10mm commander. I've never owned one, but I've shot my buddy's a few times. Pretty nice. You can find them under $1,000. Also the Rock Island Rock Ultra MS is Commander sized. Price is $750.

Not to mention, RIA?s warranty is fantastic, I had to send mine in a couple of years ago, and had it back in less than 2 weeks

Let me say right from the start, I'M A DAN WESSON FAN BOY!

If you can find a VBOB 10mm, jump on it!

Preachin' to the choir there... I have a Bruin and Vigil but DW doesn't make (if they ever did it's now not worth the hunt or $$'s for one) a compact steel frame .40 which I initially want more than a 10 for a dual caliber. The .40 according to Bambi Secret agent kicks too hard (DW must agree as they don't offer a.40?) so I had the good fortune to stumble on this one.

I shot the RIA yesterday and it's Faarrr better than I thought it would be, tack accurate, and reliable with any ammo I fed it, and it shoots way better than the modest $679 MSRP would imply and I would say easily as good as my Vigil in Super. As a ."hard kickin' .40" That says a lot!

Were you referencing me on this one? Because if so, that is the opposite of what was reported and I have repeated. These reports can be found publicly regarding the Miami shootout, subsequently FBI wanted stronger caliber, then agents couldn't shoot to agency standards, and watered it down. They kept watering it down and down until the ammo companies realized they could create the load with the power levels they could handle by simply using a 9mm frame and a shorter cartridge than the 10mm auto.

...then agents couldn't shoot to agency standards, and watered it down.

This is oft repeated, but not accurate.

The 40 S&W ballistics were born BEFORE the first shots were fired from a 10mm in the FBI ballistics lab.  The pistol they used was the personal property of one of the lab techs, and he was worried about the emerging reports of frame cracking with the Norma loads.  He handloaded some 180 grain JHP's to 950 fps with Unique and used those in the testing.

That load became the spec for ALL FBI ammo ever officially issued.

FBI agents didn't like the weight of the 1076.  The FBI mandated changes to the S&W third gen fire control group resulted in more than a few guns locking up and all of them having to go back to S&W for an update.  And likely the dropping scores were agents transitioning from DA recover to DA/SA auto and not spending enough range time to learn the DA/SA transition.

I have a Tac Ultra MS and love it. Changed the safety to a Wilson Combat and the front sight and it is my main carry weapon. Couple thousand rounds through it. accurate and reliable.

Would I like a Dan Wesson or a something nicer? yep. But I do not have the money right now for something like that and this is such a great pistol I cannot see myself changing. Tad heavy maybe with the full dust cover but easily manageable.

I have put together a couple of Commander sized 1911s and have put a 10mm barrel in them. I used the stainless steel barrels from Numrich. They are "drop in", but are a very good fit in my slides.  They will need to be finish reamed.  I have used 5 of them.  3 in Full size, and 2 in Commander. You should install a Flat Bottom Firing Pin Stop in your slide, and up the Main(Hammer) spring to 25/26#.
I put together a CCO type 1911, using a Detonics style frame and a Commander style slide, and played with a 10mm barrel in it. It worked fine. But I felt like 10mm was a bit much for an EDC gun.

Recently picked up this Les Baer Stinger Monolith in 10mm.  Commander slide with Officer Grip.  Had a few feed issues with factory ball to start, but now is running flawless.  Snappy, but a blast to shoot.
