I have a Springfield TRP in 45 acp and love it. Bought it years ago. Just getting back into the 10mm stuff and I thought, I'll just get a 10mm TRP or Operator. Then I woke up. They discontinued the TRP? Are they nuts?
Anyway, the gun will be used mostly on steel, might kill a deer, might not. What's out there for under 2,000 that's decent? I've nosed around on gunbroker and there is a bunch of 1911's I've never heard of.
I have only owned ONE so my recommendation is lowly. Its the Ruger SR1911 SS in 10mm. Trigger was 5# but after polishing the parts that move against each other installing a C&S lighter spring, its now consistent at 2 3/4# and has never hiccupped. When you add the Nelson or Marvel .22 conversion unit like I did, it will take all of your $2000 to pull it off. The .22 is now my favorite and I have some other really good stuff.
With patience buying used you can get both for around $1300.
I bought a Tisas GI 1911 on a lark about a year back. It is a very nicely made 1911. Shoots like a champ, accurate, nice and tight.
Based on my experience with that gun, along with the other positive feedback on the internets, I would shop hard for a Tisas D10

**Second choice would be a RIA. I have a Rock HC and it is a solid gun. I imagine the single stack items are similarly solid.
Next would be a Ruger SR1911. I have one and it is a fine firearm. Around $1,100.

**On review at gunbroker, the RIA offerings are cheaper than the TISAS ones. I would buy prices between those two brands.
Kimber Custom TLE II would be my recommendation. Mine is extremely accurate and runs like a champ. The front grip strap checkering is nice for handling recoil and it has night sights, just in case you ever need it as a self defense gun. Trigger was great out of the box. I'm one of those guys that likes to work on their guns to improve them and I've changed nothing on this gun except to add an ambi safety since I'm left handed.
I love my Remington R-1 in .45. I would seriously consider another in 10. What I WANT is a Commander in 10 to add to my carry rotation.
There aren't a lot of 10mm options in a commander size 1911. I think RIA offered one and, for a lot more money, Fusion will build you one. You could build one yourself, but getting a 10mm commander length barrel might take awhile.
I?m seriously considering the Tisas 1911 - D10, however it is a full-size weapon, and nothing extravagant. a good friend has one of their pistols in .45 auto, and loves it, and believe he only paid around 400.00 on GB. Tisas, like a few of the other Turkish weapons manufacturers are making some really well made and reliable weapons. I?m pretty sure the D10 doesn?t cost any more to produce, but being 10mm users are kind of a niche group, they figure they can up the price I believe these are in the 7-8 range

On the commander length 1911's in 10mm, Dan Wesson used to make one. Not sure if they still do. Considered it a couple years ago when I was looking for one. Was quoted $1600 to order it by my LGS. Ended up finding the commander length Tac Ultra single stack RIA for $700. Again, prices are 3 years old so no idea on current pricing or availability
Been thinking about this more. While I still stand by my budget options, if I was going to spend $2000 on a pistol, I would get a Dan Wesson Specialist. They are between $1800-$2000 on gunbroker and are, IMHO, every bit as good as the Les Baer, Ed Brown, Wilson guns that are 50% to 100% more.
But, what I own is RIA and Ruger in 10mm and Tisas in 45 ACP.

Plus one ++ on the Dan Wesson. Our son and I have a few and all are stellar pistols! Nicely featured and detailed, accurate and reliable. In 10mm we only have a Bruin Bronze that my son uses for chasing bears with hounds; It's an excellent firearm that rivals many of the semi-custom 1911s out there.
If you have the money the Dan Wesson is really nice, my second favorite would be the rock island armory 10mm, next from there is my Springfield ro elite (only because it is finicky and it won't run box ammo I have to re crimp everything for it to cycle).
