Title: FN M249 SAW light machine gun
Post by: Kenk on March 31 2022 08:49:28 AM MDT
a good friend of mine just received his preordered FN M249S last week. Coming in at $10,500.00, it seems incredibly impractical to me, but hey, if you have that kind of dough,  it would be pretty sweet

Good weapon in certain situations such as suppressive fire.
The 5.56 in urban terrains often involved vehicles and the penetration qualities of 7.62 in the M240 or M60 was much better. We quickly changed our operation procedures to adapt the weapon system to the threat.

Nope, but a pretty neat weapon other than the price tag

The last Barrett M82A1 that I sold, was a touch over $10k.  It had a Schmidt and Bender PMII scope and Badger Ordnance rings on it though, which costed about $2800.  That's why it was over $10k.

I've never spent that much on any of my guns either.  It was when I had my FFL and the guy came in wanting one.  I told him to bring me a bank/cashier check for the amount, and I'd order it.  I never thought he would, but about 3 days later, he came back with the bank check.  I ordered it for him and did the transfer.  I was a little surprised in how heavy the thing was.  I would say in the low to mid 30 lb territory.

I do have a transferable submachinegun that are going for around or just over 10k right now, but I don't have even 1/3 of what they're selling for tied up in it.  And to be honest, that was the most expensive gun I've ever bought, but I always wanted a machinegun, and that was one of my lifelong goals, so I bought it.  I bought it at an estate sale.  His wife just wanted a double tombstone for them.  I told her she could get more out of it, but she wasn't interested in auctioning it or putting it on consigment somewhere.  So, we both was able to get something we both wanted out of it and we both walked away as happy as you could be considering the circumstances.

I got a really great deal on it.  And I was honest with her that she could get more out of it in other ways, but she said by the time she paid auction fees, and other things she wasn't comfortable with going that route and the dealers she had spoken to hadn't taken the time to explain the details about everything in the way that I did.  So, she sold it to me face to face (which is legal).  Granted that I had to wait over 8 months to take the receiver home, but when I paid her for it, I took the upper and the bolt with me.  She kept the receiver until someone in the government finally signed the transfer paper, then I was able to get the registered part of the gun then I went back and got it.

At the time, she was asking $2500 for it, which was lower than what they were going for at the time.  It was just at one of those panics when obama was first elected and the housing bubble had collapsed and the prices of machineguns plummeted for a while because a lot of people were dumping them onto the marketed, saturating it, and I had just sold an AR15 for $1700, so I had most of the money I paid for it burning a hole in my pocket in the first place, so I scraped another $800 towards what I already had and bought it.  As for buying machineguns, that was the perfect storm and was certainly a buyers market.

She was glad that she was able to get the tombstone she wanted for them.  I was glad that I was finally able to have a machinegun.  It was probably the best outcome available, all things considered.

Then there?s the ?feeding it? part. If it were mine, I?d likely load her up as much as possible, grin up a storm while shooting, clean and polish it, and back in the safe it goes 😊

I enjoy shooting it.  But, in fairness, it only gets a couple of mags through it when I do take it out just so I can maintain my proficiency with it.

And this year, I haven't been shooting as much as in years past because it's so hard to replace what I shoot up.

But that goes for anything.  While mine is a 9mm smg, 9mm doesn't cost as much as 308 or many rifle calibers.  So, while I can shoot more bangs for the same amount of bucks, I'm using up 3x the amount of primers to do it.  So, it's always a balancing act.
