Title: Out of Power Pistol
Post by: gadabout on December 20 2021 01:36:57 PM MST
Can't find it anywhere. I worked up a load with HP-38 using 4.4 with a 125g bullet it would not always cycle the action so I went to 4.8 and it works perfectly. Craig

Hey thanks for info. I tried to fill out the info but they want you to use Zelllo or whatever and I want to use my card so I passed on that site.  Craig

Looks like a total scam. They have things in stock that nobody has. Prices are less than half of market prices in some cases. Reputable companies dont only accept Venmo and PayPal.

I?ve never ordered from them. Their prices are pretty much inline with powder and primer prices at the brick and mortar stores I frequent. One of those has most Hornady bullets in stock, too. A quick check of Cabelas website lists most primers in stock at the two locations near me. But they won?t sell them online. Sportsman?s Warehouse has primers fairly often, but doesn?t list them on their website. Scrounging for components seems to be getting just a little easier.

This company has a phone number. One could always call and check them out.

Website says they are located in San Diego, CA. Phone number is Los Angeles area code.

Yep dont want to see anyone get burned. You would be doing a cash transfer with zero recourse.

Absolutely, have seen several lately that don?t take traditional payments. Anyone offering primes or powder online for pre-pandemic prices gets my attention fast.

Well today I was having a little trouble with the 4.8 load of HP-38 so I went to 5.2 fixed everything I can now load 1500 rounds. Thanks everyone for the input. I have a lot of concern about ordering on the net when I can't use a standard credit card. Oh well I am good for a few months anyway.  Craig

That domain is registered to a company in Cameroon, Africa.  I wouldn't buy from them.

Well this is a lot later and I am out of HP38. Went to lock for Universal and I am out of that. I was looking into a load using Trail Boss but it doesn't look to good from what I gather from the net. You need more powder than can fit in the case. I only have 300mp and AA9 oh and some other rifle powder. Any ideas???? Oh yeah if I am real desperate I can buy AA5 locally for 45.00 a pound. Any ideas???  Craig

OK just got the AA5 and the load data is very close to power pistol. I will load and test.  Craig

The first rounds were way too light and wouldn't work the slide. bumped up the charge and it does function now. Power Pistol is better. The data is done by bullet brand and weight but the loads are all over the place. Oh well I can use it!!  Craig

Well I went to the range this morning and all the snow fell in their parking lot. Got in talked to the owner who was shoveling snow and he didn't think they would be open today as their air system wouldn't start. I am to call this afternoon if I ant to shoot but the roads are so bad it will take a warm day to fix the roads. Craig

Hey Ken, I am from way upstate New York. No one down here knows what real snow is!! I would say we would get 3 to 4 feet and it didn't go away for 4 months. MN I have heard cam really get some though. Craig

Got a question. I have been using some different powders as Power Pistol is not available anywhere, The problem with these powders is as max or near max they are not as powerful as a max minus .6 of Power Pistol. An example. I was shooting 125g with Accurate #5 at max data from their site and it is much less powerful than Power Pistol at 6.0 6.3 being max. Had the same problems with HS-38 and Universal. Am I missing something or is using web site company data just light loads? I even had people ask what I was using in my loads when I shot the PP loads as they said it sounded much loader and the recoil is much more. Let me know what you think!!  Craig

Hey Craig, I?m pretty sure the manufacturers max load data is on the conservative side

Hey Ken I had rounds so light it wouldn't work the slide and to fix I went a full grain over max and it still wasn't as good as Power Pistol!!! Craig

For sure, PP is a wonderful powder when you can get it

Shot a new to me FN 509 this morning and it shot great. I needed a FN for my collection. I wish I shot as good as the gun but to much diet coke and had the shakes a little but shot OK considering. I am almost out of 9mm and can't reload except for AA5 powder and I guess I can jack it up some to work better.  Craig

AA5 works well in 9mm  Just not the top velocity maker depending on the bullet.

Wade, I shot today aa5 at 6.5g with a 124g bullet was very close to my under max Power Pistol rounds.  I also compared it to Speer Lawman 115g FMJ factory rounds and the Speer were a little hotter!! The aa5 load is good enough and I will load at this rate. Craig

Those should run bout 1130 fps with that load Craig

Well it's a record for me anyway, 1 degree shooting this morning. Yup 1 degree when I left for the range and 2 degrees when I got there. It's a whopping 11 degrees now and it's like a tropical heat wave. Ha Ha!!!   Craig

Right now, Midway has VV N105, which is very similar to both Power Pistol and AA5 in stock.

Hey thanks for the input but I am holding out for Power pistol as aa5 isn't as good.  Craig

OK it's official the Accurate data is VERY low on the internet and testing today it would not cycle the action on numerous guns. I will stay at 6.5 for 115 and 125g for 9mm. They don't list a round over 5.5 or close and it doesn't work. At leased I am still able to shoot.  Craig

Well I just looked up Nosler data for 9mm aa5 powder and it is my numbers or a little more for max. Who'd a thought?   Craig

As keeping up with my range trips per day I went this morning in a hail storm!!  Shot pretty good though! Went to my holster making guy's house yesterday and he made two new holsters and one fix/repair to the Glock because I put the green dot on it. We are up in the air on the Taurus TH9! I just may never need to carry it. It's a little larger than 6 or 8 of my other 9's. Nice gun though. BTW shot a CZ 75 E something and it was easily the best trigger I have ever shot. I will get one as soon as they are in!! That's it for now.  Craig

In my testing with various calibers, the two powders I've found closest to Power Pistol is Alliants BE-86 and Hodgdons Longshot.  Longshot is more of a flattened ball powder and can produce some impressive velocity numbers.  BE-86 is a relatively new powder and if it weren't for the small amount of off color flakes, I would have a hard time telling the difference between it and Power Pistol.  I also get better accuracy on target with BE-86 and Power Pistol.

Some say BE-86 is close to Power Pistol with a flash suppressant added and my load work ups in various calibers seem to indicate that.  I suspect the flash suppressant increases the burn rate / pressure curve slightly.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

In my neighborhood nothing is available except some AA powders mostly for rifle and shotgun. I got the AA5 working but it's crap compared to Alliants powders. I can't buy any Alliant powder locally and haven't seen any for over 6 months.  Craig
