I recently purchased a Witness in 10mm. I installed a 20 pound recoil spring in it before I fired it. It functions very well, but I have one issue. It launches spent brass a good 30 feet. This is a problem because I don't have a great supply of brass, and it is difficult to find the brass casings when they are thrown that far. Does anyone know if I install a heavier recoil spring, it will slow down the slide enough to moderate the force with which the brass is ejected. As far as I know, the heaviest recoil spring available is 22 pounds.
The 22 pound spring won't help much. Maybe 1-2 feet less.
This is common for the Witness and 10mm in general.
I bought a cheap photography backdrop and frame on Amazon for $50 and put it to my right to stop the brass from flying (if shooting outdoors).
Edit: the other link didn't have the frame. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08HYNV9T7/ref=sspa_mw_detail_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pd_rd_i=B08HYNV9T7p13NParams&th=1
Lol, my RIA full size 10mm, and Sig P220 Elite travel easily that far, if not further, will be looking into Patriots link as well
Yep my XDM with full power loads is about the same. Was shooting a full size deer target on the 50 yard range and brass was bouncing of the bench two stations over.
Yea, very frustrating, but well worth it 😀
The trick is to set up your shooting area 3 miles behind and to the right of another 10mm shooter. If you both face away from each other then your brass will land at his feet and vice versa :P.
In all seriousness, Patriot has the right answer: Better containment. Another option, though a bit more money, is to buy one of those 10X10 shade awnings at Costco when they are on sale, then sew mosquito netting onto all four sides. Add a tarp floor and a folding table and chair and you have shade, a bench, a shooting rest, no bugs, and contained brass all together. Shoot through the same side each time and patch the netting if needed.
I love it 😂
Indoors, I use a Handheld Brass Catcher

Outdoors, I use a DIY Brass Catcher with a similar design, that sets on the Bench or on a TriPod for standing / shooting offhand

Morning DenStinett, what hand held catcher do you use? And is workable with most pistols?, my primary range is a hayfield, close by and no fees and or other shooters. The down side is I lose 60 to 80% of my brass?yea, I know, a big price to pay for shooting but love shooting at this place. Any thoughts on Amazon / other URS would be great. I do have incredibly nice indoor options, but am ok opting out at this time
Thanks man!

Hey Ken:
The Handheld I use most often is the Catch-All, and I also have a Graco
I catch better the 99%
Can't say it's 100, but I rarely lose a Case, even in 10mm
There are a couple others out there that look good i.e. :

The one I use outdoor, I made from PVC and a Net Laundry Bag
Hope you find what works best for you
Low earth orbit or geosynchronous?
That?s for sure, the price we pay for such an awesome rd
Den Stinett posted a picture of his brass catcher sometime ago w/ a M1A, I think, pictured with it and later posted the dimensions of the catcher due to a request from another member. I built one based on his and made a stand from scrap wood. Had to use 2 of the "bags" and make it deeper to suit my needs.
It works fine and if brass occasionally bounces out of the bag, it ends up right at my feet so I hardly ever loose any brass. I belong to a private, outdoor range.
Thanks to Den Stinett for posting that picture several years ago.

Low earth orbit or geosynchronous?
Pretty sure mine have the velocity to make a Hohmann transfer orbit. :P
I've tried hand/arm-mounted gadgets but don't care for them - several reasons. My solution is a large contraption involving fishnet material draped from a wide frame with a tarp underneath. Not meant to catch, just knock directly to the ground. Big so I can stand and move just a little. Wind breezes through the net vs. blown over. 'Draped' is key as any exposed (hard) frame surface will cause ricochets to be lost or hit your face.
Most of the brass I loose burns up on re-entry.
I shoot in my pasture and what I've gone to, semi fixed is atarp. Fire a few rounds to establish a base impact zone. Then sort of centre 10x12 tarp on the zone, Raise the distant end to farm an "L" that will stop the longer runners and bounce them back on the tarp. Landscape fabric might be a tad better since the brass won't skitter as easily. I don't think I loose 5%, probably less
I would install a +8 pound recoil spring and rod from Tromix. 8)

When I first got a Witness I had the same issue. Changing springs made it harder to rack the slide but didn't make. Much difference in the launching of brass. A helpful member of another forum who knows the Tanfoglio pistol well. Explained to me that they all use the same ejector..... which means that the ejector engages the brass "early" in the 10mm compared to the ejection cycle of the gun in 9mm. SHORTEN the ejector and the brass is ejected less violently. A few minutes with a dremel got my brass landing 10-12 feet away instead of 35-50 . I could shorten a bit more but I want positive ejection and I find it acceptable at this level.
