Title: Problem w/ my G-20 using a 6 " L/W barrel
Post by: jiminthe burg on April 11 2013 04:32:38 PM MDT
Finally loaded some lead to use in the l/w barrel. Rounds were fitting like they should in the barrel.

Started off with  a few strings using a 200 fmj fp from Precision Delta over 10.3 grs of AA # 7 using new starline. Everything was fine in terms of accuracy and over-all functioning.

I have used the same hard cast lead in my 1006 and 610 using both lpp and mpp. No problems what so ever using a 180 gr hardcast & 8.5 grs of Blue Dot.  They smoke quite a bit ( thinking it is grease being burned) but they are accurate and I have not seen any signs of leading. Maker says they have a hardness of 18-20.

When I switched over to the lead, first 2 strings of 10 rounds went fine-accurate and pistol was functioning properly-used 9. grs of AA # 7. However as I got to the 3 rd string, ther were a couple of times when the pistol would not go into battery at the end of the cycle.  Accuracy declined also. When i was shooting the 3rd string, I manually ejected a couple of rounds when they would not go into battery but when I put them on the clip and released the slide lock, it went into battery and fired the first round.

It very quickly got to the point that it would not go into battery. I tried  the factory barrel and several rounds passed the "plunk-test"

When I got home a very through cleaning ( I always clean my pistols each time after I shoot them )enabled the rounds  chamber properly.

Thoughts about why that may have happened? There did appear to be some fouling just before the rifling started.  Was this too much powder ?

Is the L/w so tight that it  can be blocked by carbon and grease

In looking at the barrel when i put a round in it ( lead & fmj ), it  looked like it lacked  > a 16 th of an " of being able to chamber properly.

Any thoughts  would be appreciated

It could be a buildup of soot and some lead at the end of the chamber which aggravated the situation...Usually this is more common on tight chambered barrels.
