Title: witness barrel
Post by: blaster on June 22 2021 07:16:20 PM MDT
just when my Witness Steel 10mm pistol finally got broken in and was shooting great, I had a jam. >:( on closer examination I could see that the slide was out of battery. I had to force it open. when I disassembled the pistol I saw that the link on the bottom of the barrel was cracked and coming off! :o I tried contacting EAA but all I could do was e-mail them. no more phone number on the web site. >:( I have been waiting for a reply for about a week now with no luck. I don't want to make a warranty claim as the pistol is a few years old and has seen a lot of hot reloads. I just want to buy a new 10mm barrel. I looked on some other sites and the only aftermarket barrels I saw were .40 S&W & 9mm. does anyone here know of any 10mm aftermarket barrels for the Witness? I had bought a .$) S&W conversion barrel and magazines a while ago and thats what I'm shooting in it now but I want a 10mm Witness not a .40! ::)

I have (321) 639-4842 and I tried it to make sure it's working. Good luck

PS, across the web they have a horrible rep for "service"

;D when I got home today there was an e-mail from EAA. they sent an order form for a new 10mm barrel. I was pleasantly surprised at the price. $131. all the after mkt. ones I saw were over $200. so I ordered another barrel and hope to have a 10mm Witness again soon.

Phone up Patriot Defense and see if they have a swap-out piece

well I got the new barrel. when I was disassembling the pistol to install it I noticed the CRACKED FRAME!!! :o >:D it was a barely noticeable hairline crack running from the safety lever to the back of the frame along the cut out for the slide rail. the same exact place the crack was on the other Witness that I sent back that this one replaced! whats the deal!? I shoot max loads but nothing nuclear. it seems to me that a firearm should function and digest the ammo it is chambered for without breaking. the steel Witness looks and feels very strong and well made. Tanfoligo and Italian gun makers are not new kids in the industry. they should have good knowledge of metallurgy. the CZ 75 design is  time proven. is this why CZ itself does not make a 10mm? do they know the design will have failures with the 10mm?
anyway, my broken pistol has been shipped back to EAA. I'm sure they will replace it but I'm don't want a 10mm pistol that can only handle .40 S&W power loads. I hope these last 2 have been flukes and just my bad luck but jeeze, 2 in a row!

Probably an unnecessary question but had you replaced the recoil springs on the 10s?

^ yes, 20# recoil spring as well as xtra power firing pin spring, flat bottom firing pin stop, "cone fit guide rod" and a few other "up grades".

I never had one that cracked to date. Any photos?

I didn't take any photos of the crack but the FFL who shipped it back did. but even if I had a photo, I can't post pictures on this forum.

Very interested in this topic, I've been trying to get EAA to answer my emails for months to buy a 4.75" or 6" 10mm barrel for my Witness Match. Did you have better luck calling them?

DWilliams - EAA emailed me before I called them. it did take a few days but they replied. their customer service has improved greatly compared to a few years ago.

update;  he other day, my FFL called me to say that my replacement Witness had arrived! the bad part is I can't pick it up because I'm out of State for a week or so.

yesterday I picked up the replacement pistol EAA sent me. it came with a silver Wonder Finish frame and a black slide. ( my other was all silver) not a big deal because it looks really sharp. plus it has a fully adjustable rear sight! (my other two had fixed sights. the sights on this new pistol are of the flat black "target" style that I can barely see. so after the first range session  I put a couple of drops of luminous sight paint on them.  I put a 50 rd box of Magtech factory hardball thru it and it ran flawlessly! then I shot a hundred or so rounds of my 165 gr  reloads thru it and it ran great! at home I field stripped the Witness and cleaned it. today I took it back to my "range" with the sights painted and shot a hundred or so of my 180 gr HST & cast bullets and some more 165 gr. reloads. other than a couple of magazine caused FTFs, it ran flawless. and seeing the sights really improved my accuracy! even though the paint came off the front sight, I could have killed a hog at 25 yds.

this pistol is even better than its predecessor which was an improvement of its predecessor. hopefully this one's frame wont crack like the last two. it is a real great feeling shooter. I am not even going to install the upgrades used in my other Witnesses to help with reliability. this one runs so good stock that I'm afraid to do anything to it!

I started my love affair with 10mm specifically because of EAA/Tanfoglio. At one time I had 9 tanfoglio 10mm pistols. I started buying them back in 2001. Everything I did was related to the Witness line. Even all of my email addresses had Witness10 or eaawitness in them.

But here's what I learned over time. Every single one of them had issues. Most would jam. When they didn't jam, the slide cracked. Or the frame cracked. Or the mags were trash. I had some that looked amazing and others of the same model that looked like they had cut parts with a hack saw.

After spending THOUSANDS of dollars on these things, I finally gave up. As much I disliked Glocks, I switched to Glock for reliability, and never had a problem. Now I have a couple Springfield's and have never had a problem.
