Title: Here we go again
Post by: Kenk on April 12 2021 08:31:10 PM MDT
We are 39 miles away in a small (4200) person community and still got the curfew order to stay inside, it's like...what the heck!

Yah Ken, you might want to considering moving to the metro Detroit area, where it's safe :))

Yep, but no, I'm good living in our sleepy little community, but am getting really tired of the unrest. I don't care if your purple if your a decent person, but dang it, looting and throwing bricks and frozen soda cans at law enforcement isn't ok

I have never worked in law enforcement, but did complete my BS in criminal justice with an emphasis on information systems and security in 2014, (a late bloomer to be sure 😊) and have learned a great deal. Yes, there is no shortage of bad apples out there, but this is a tough job for not a ton of money. I give these folks a lot of credit, as it's thankless job, yet incredibly important...all of you in law enforcement, keep up the great job and be safe

I'm a supporter of law enforcement 100%, and did some time with a badge, and several more years in the security industry. Things need to change. They train police to believe "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6." It's time to change this philosophy. Trigger happy cops, because of fear, is a serious issue and is no good for any of us. Especially gun owners. I surely don't want to be shot while legally carrying just because some rookie cop is afraid. They need to stop shooting people just because they "might be reaching for something" or "moved his hand near his waist band." Too many times there's no weapon found.

Thanks man, I like never get pulled over, but is something I have thought about a great deal. In MN, the older LEO folks are pretty cool when it comes to folks carrying, but like you said, the rookies are a bit of a concern

I too wore a badge before I jumped to the more lucrative IT sector.  I worked in corrections and on the street.

I think my time in corrections was extremely valuable.  All you have is your verbal judo skills of de-escalation and a 1-2 shot can of pepper spray.  And you KNOW you are in a room with criminals, many of whom have violent convictions in their recent past.  You learn very quickly that jumpy begets jumpy and that it is easier for you to evaluate the situation if you maintain your calm.  You learn that if you treat people with respect, they reciprocate.

Unfortunately you also learn that many officers don't pay attention to verbal judo skills and have a "respect ma 'thority" attitude that escalates emotions.  I remember very well one such officer that was always getting in screaming matches with inmates in the hallway or the dorm.  Luckily he didn't stick around long.

I agree with Patriot that training protocols and department policies need to align better with protecting citizens rights. Too often I have read and still read policies that when taken to the logical conclusion advocate destroying the very thing they are meant to protect.
