Title: Anyone into AIR guns?
Post by: cwlongshot on April 05 2013 07:13:25 PM MDT
I always liked them and wanted a ''springer'' for years after reading about a Feinwerkbau 124 in .177 shooting pigeons in a National Rifleman as a boy.

I had a Daisy lever and later a Sheridan Blue Streak. I had that rifle up until about 10 years ago when I lent it to a ''friend''. It and he disappeared shortly after and has dropped off the radar ever since. SO I bought a my first springer shortly after. A RWS 34 in 22 cal. Great accurate rifle. Next was a couple cheap Crosman's a 7600 .177 and 2100 and then a 1322. Fun but not the power or accuracy of the RWS. Last month I found a real good deal on a Webly Hurricane in .177. This thing shoots GREAT! its been tuned to almost 900fps with heavy .177 pellets and shoots them into a dime at 25 yards.

Last month a friend on another board I frequent offered me his non functional Blue Streak and supplied a repair shot out in California, Mac 1 Airguns. Apparently this man Tim McMurry specializes in Sheridan and and Benjis and even tunes them to much higher performance! I sent him the action Thursday. I am refinishing the walnut and waiting for its return probably late June.

But I have been missing my Sheridan. I have sent letters to the last known address a couple times and got no answer. I searched his name on the computer and dont you know, he came up on facebook! Its him as he had a picture, only I am not on facebook. Well I was able to get his email address there at FB and sent him two emails... Don't you know he answered me!!! Moved and lost my numbers yada yada yada. But he still has the Sheridan and will ship it back to me!!!

Looking forward to shooting these Sheridan s. Any of you guys into air guns or Sheridan or Benjamin rifles?

At the moment all I have is an older Benjamin Pump .177 cal, I put a Tasco 3x9x32 scope on it and tag squirrels around the house, they are so destructive.  I shot one running across the top of the neighbor's fence at a 100+ feet, shooting gallery style, he never knew what hit him! ;D

I have been on the look out for a Sam Yang Big Bore 909S  PCP .45 Cal 780 FPS with the 185 grain Lyman Devastator HP bullets I cast for the 45ACP.  Some way, Some day!

Yeah.  Sam Yang.  Not cheap.  Not Daisy or Sheridan's, either.  Shatters cinder blocks on the range, and will take large game off the range.  A friend took a 400# black bear a few years ago with one, at 120 yds.  Use ear protection at full pressure!  More noise than a .45-70!  SCUBA tanks are better than pumps.

Today I finished sanding the stocks. I started with 80grit paper to take off the remaining finish and sand out a couple imperfections. Then I went to 100g, then 150g finally twice with 220g. Wetting with damp cloth in between. These stocks are HARD and I actually saw more material removed with the finer grits. I then took a rasp to the pistol grip. Re shaping the toe and grip cap. Mostly defining them better and then I slimmed the grip for my larger hands.

Suttle changes, but should show some of the nuances of the grain better as well as feel better in the hand.

I also finished the forend. I had a little filling to do as I did on the butt. Unfortunately both will show as they didn't take the finish as well or the same as surrounding wood did. BUT they are what I like to call ''character'' marks.

I hit the pump/fore stock with DK Walnut stain. Then rubbed it hot with clean cloth to remove excess. I think its a pretty good match, at least I should be closer then it was... (Guess I forgot to snap a pic.)

Tomorrow one last rub down with 000 wool and then first coats of tongue oil.

No, bad things happens to neighbor's pets when they enter my yard and have an air gin. I got tired of my neighbor's frigging poodle coming over to my yard to do his daily pinch. One day I grabbed up the old Crossman 760, gave it about 2 pumps and waited. Sure enough, he walks over and starts to squat, bam!, right in his butt. He yiped and jumped up about 5 foot in the air. Looked around, and started to squat again. Round two right in the butt. Hasn't been back since!

As a kid we seemed to have stray/feral dogs and cats all the time. Looking back we probably got dumped from one of the city's. any how. I hated to shoot them but seriously got tired of picking up garbage sometimes two three times a nite. My father bought a blow gun that was advertised in the back on American rifleman. Used 3/8 beads and steel wire. I quickly learned the beads alone where perfect and they sure left a good wealt but would not break the skin on a dog or cat. I must have "shot" 50 that summer. Then it severely slowed. The word of out!! Stay away and they learned. Coons and possums got the sheridan or 22 depending on the way the wind blew that night...

Yesterday I got two more coats on... I'm in early this AM with some problems. But with that cleared I just willed them and applied another coat. This is five I believe.  It looked great at four and I was gonna quit but found two imperfections I did not like. So at least one more today. We see what it looks like tonight when this coat is dry.

I am another step closer to shooting the Sheridan today...   Over at Pyramid air, they had a Easter sale, so I was looking to see what .20/5MM pellets they might have... I was quite pleased to see many choices and all in stock!!

SO, as my wife always tells me I went a bit over board...  ;D ;D :P Do this make me a Horder?? Its only 2000 rounds...err I mean Pellets!!  :o :o

When you post here trying to find a 5mm pellet mold then you will be a bit overboard.  But just a bit.

I run two Pellet Guns
One, a Umarex / Colt 1911-A1
Very nice CO2 .177 Pellet Shooter
So close, it's hard to tell it from a real 1911:

The other is a .177 Crosman Nitro Venom
Added a nicer Scope and an NcStar M2 BiPod:

Both are quite accurate and very fun to shoot

Since you're on the topic of Air Guns / springers ....... I've got a .177 Diana RWS 460 Magnum thats been setting in my closet for a year or so . Supposed to be one of the top rated springers http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Diana_RWS_460_Magnum/1204 Let me tell you the story  >:( , First .... I think the gun is too heavy second it's very, very accurate and fun to shoot. I put maybe 100 rounds thru it and the eyelet that connects the cocking leaver to the spring tube broke. I sent it back to Pyramyd Air they replaced the tube where the eyelet connects and serviced the gun. When I got the gun back I ran another 75 or so pellets thru her  SAME THING HAPPENS AGAIN :(  Called  Pyramyd Air spoke to the repair center supervisor, sent it back, repaired under supervision of supervisor and completely serviced.

Since then its been setting in my gun closet. If anyone would be interested in taking a chance, or have Air Rifle (Springer type) experience I would like to sell this. Maybe you'd have better luck than me  $350.00 to include ground shipping, 500 beeman extra heavy pellets, 500 Meisterkugeln pro pellets, 200 Hyper Velocity pellets, box of small paper targets, UTG Scope Mount Base. Please contact Via PM

I have a 22 crossman pump like the one above.  It needs new seals.  I ran it across the chronograph last summer when I first got the chrony.  Same velocity at 2 pumps as at 5 or 8 or 10.  New seals would likely make a huge difference.

STILL waiting on the Sheridan's here...  :o :o

The one in California getting the upgrades and re-build isnt due till mid June. So that's on schedule!  :D :D But the one that was lent out... SEVEN years ago STILL has not found its way back to me. Apparently the guy who borrowed it is on no apparent hurry to return it. I have heard all the excuses now...  Two weeks ago it was he lost my emails and my address. This week he cannot find a box and has been very busy...

In the mean time, I have been building up a 1377 into a carbine. I also souped up the valve and Piston and have reached almost 800 fps  from a gun factory rated at 550fps.

I joined the club this weekend.  My father-in-law asked to borrow a pellet gun to dispatch a rabbit that has been eating his garden.  Besides mine being inaccessible during the remodel, I knew it's seals were shot and it would probably just annoy a rabbit.

So, a local store had a Beeman RS2 dual caliber single shot air rifle.  They didn't have any decent 22 pellets, but had some ok .177 pellets.

I installed the .177 barrel and headed over to my house where I had a framed but not sheetrocked great room that is 33' across.  Made a great 25' range.

Once i got it all dialed in I put 9/10 pellets in a junk lightswitch.  Not the switch plate, the actual switch.  It's, I don't know, maybe 1/2" wide and 3/4" tall.

My father-in-law has it now.  Although, it appears that perhaps the rabbit got the memo, since he hasn't appeared at his usual time since the rifle was purchased.

That RS2 is a fine shootin' air gun!  Another friend also just picked one up!! Beeman guns are top quality airguns!  I know you will enjoy it!

I have started the re-build. The stocks have been sanded and steel wooled and currently have 6 coats of finish applied.

I don't have anything against air guns, but pretty much limit myself to my Daisy 880 Powerline (which has literally hundreds of kills to its and my credit).

A girlfriend once bought me a Beeman spring piston air rifle for my birthday.  After about shot #50 or so it broke and that was then end of that.  Guess it was the thought that counted.  Anyway, it went right into the trash barrel.

Sorry to hear that. Too bad too as Crosman owns Benji and they are an American company with a good warranty. They would have made it right!

Well I decided eight coats was enough!  :o ;D Here is BOTH sets of Sheridan wood.
I am very pleased with these! The newest Sheridan is the lighter colored wood, its on top in the first two pics and on the left in the last. The set from my original gun is the one I just finished. I fit a Marlin pad to each of them. New brass screws hold the trigger guards replacing factory rivets on both as well.

While I was waiting I came across a very clean Benji 342. As a kid, a child hood friend had this gun and we had a lot of fun shooting it... So I bought it too.  :o ;)

My earliest BB gun was an old Daisy found in a park. I got mad because my younger brother shot it better than I could. I finally beat him when I got a Crossman .760.
